# TXT record lookup

> Look up the TXT records on any domain for free. SPF, DMARC, DKIM and domain verification records are explained in plain English. No sign-up.

Type a domain, or a full name such as _dmarc.yourcompany.com. We show every TXT record there and say what each one is for.

Use the tool in a browser at [/tools/txt-record-lookup](https://www.acquisity.ai/tools/txt-record-lookup). It is free and needs no sign-up.

## What TXT records are for

A TXT record is a line of text stored in a domain’s DNS. Services read it to learn something about the domain: email servers read SPF, DMARC and DKIM from TXT records, and services such as Google and Microsoft 365 ask you to add one to prove you own the domain.

A name can have many TXT records, and each is read on its own, so adding one doesn’t change the others. The exception is SPF: a domain must have only one SPF record.

## Where the email records live

- SPF is a TXT record on the domain itself that starts with v=spf1.
- DMARC is a TXT record at _dmarc.yourdomain.com that starts with v=DMARC1.
- DKIM is a TXT record at selector._domainkey.yourdomain.com, where the selector is a name your email service picks.

## Questions

### How do I look up a TXT record?

Type the domain, or the full name of the record such as _dmarc.yourcompany.com, and press Look up. We ask DNS for the TXT records at exactly that name and show each one with what it is for. To check SPF, DMARC and DKIM together, use the [SPF checker](https://www.acquisity.ai/tools/spf-checker).

### Why is my TXT record split into several parts?

One string in a TXT record holds at most 255 characters, so a longer record, such as a DKIM key, is stored as several strings. Email servers join them back together without adding spaces, and so do we. We say when a record was stored as more than one string.

### Why don’t I see the record I just added?

DNS changes can take from a few minutes up to 48 hours to reach everyone, depending on your DNS provider and the record’s TTL, and our answers can be up to a minute old. Also check the name: most DNS providers add your domain for you, so a record named _dmarc ends up at _dmarc.yourcompany.com.

### What does “This name doesn’t exist” mean?

DNS answered that nothing at all is set up at that name, which usually means a typo. When the name exists but has no TXT records, we say that instead.

## Sending cold email? Keep it off your main domain.

Acquisity sends cold email from separate domains, with SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up for you. [Cold Email Agent](https://www.acquisity.ai/agents/cold-email).
