# A record lookup

> Look up the A and AAAA records of any domain for free and see the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses it points to. Plain-English results, no sign-up.

Type a domain or a hostname such as mail.yourcompany.com. We show the IPv4 addresses (A records) and IPv6 addresses (AAAA records) it points to.

Use the tool in a browser at [/tools/a-record-lookup](https://www.acquisity.ai/tools/a-record-lookup). It is free and needs no sign-up.

## What A and AAAA records are

An A record points a name to an IPv4 address, such as 192.0.2.10. An AAAA record does the same for an IPv6 address, such as 2001:db8::10. Browsers, email servers and other services read them to find the server behind a name.

A name can have several of each, to share the load between servers. It can also have none of one kind: many domains have IPv4 addresses and no IPv6 address.

## When to check them

- After moving a website to a new host, to see that the domain points to the new server.
- When setting up a mail server, to check that its hostname points to the server’s IP address, which [reverse DNS](https://www.acquisity.ai/tools/reverse-dns-lookup) needs.
- When a site can’t be reached, to see whether its name points anywhere at all.

## Questions

### What is the difference between an A record and an AAAA record?

An A record holds an IPv4 address, written as four numbers such as 192.0.2.10. An AAAA record holds an IPv6 address, the longer kind written with colons, such as 2001:db8::10. We look up both at once.

### Does www need its own A record?

Yes. www.yourcompany.com is a separate name, so it needs its own A record, or a CNAME record that points to another name. Type it with the www to look it up. When a name is a CNAME, we follow it and show the addresses it leads to.

### How long until a change shows up?

Usually a few minutes, but DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to reach everyone, depending on your DNS provider and the record’s TTL. Our answers can also be up to a minute old, so look up the name again a little later.

## Sending cold email? Keep it off your main domain.

Acquisity sends cold email from separate domains, with SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up for you. [Cold Email Agent](https://www.acquisity.ai/agents/cold-email).
